Yellow has become my favorite color

Each day in the afternoon for the last week, this little fellow comes calling. He tries several windows, hovering against the glass, trying to enter the house. He's about the size of a robin, and his color is just as startling as the picture. He's a Bullock's Oriole. They forage in trees and eat insects, berries and nectar. His habitat ranges across the U.S.

Tiger Swallowtail butterflies are fluttering around our garden for the first time in years. With a wingspan ranging from 3.5 inches to 6.5 inches, they are hard to miss. Nectar from a lilac flower, which they sip with a long tongue, is one of their favorite foods.

Apparently, yellow is my lucky color this year. Mother Nature had a deft hand when she painted her children. How lucky are we to be able to see the splendor she created?

Have you seen any unusual or beautiful natural works of art where you are?

  1. Oh wow! I love that oriole! We have some lovely birds in California, but not quite so colorful. I've been surprised to see gold finches out here recently - the state bird of my home state, Iowa. I'm used to seeing rosy finches, but not gold finches.
When we moved out here 20 years ago, we had lots and lots of swallowtail butterflies. Now, with the semi-recent housing boom, not so many.
I do love birds - we have a booming bluebird population so that's good, right?

  2. Yes, bluebirds are beautiful. We have lots of Red-Winged Blackbirds, too. I've lived here all my life and have never seen an oriole like this one.

  3. We have lots of red-winged blackbirds. Love them!

  4. Unfortunately, we have been invaded by Asian Doves. They are larger than gray doves and very noisy. They have run off the gray doves, magpies and most of the sweet quail. Maybe they'll move on. ;)

  5. This is so funny. It seems that everything that catches my eye at the moment is yellow as well! Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting. I really appreciate it. I also responded there. Donna

    Love your blog.

  6. Hi Donna, thank you for dropping by. I've bookmarked your blog. See you there and nice to meet you.
